The filing comes in response to a claim by Kelly’s lawyers that 55-year-old Kelly was placed on suicide watch as a form of punishment last week after a judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison for using his fame for sexual exploitation women and girls.
The public prosecutor’s office initially said that the measure was necessary after a psychological examination for Kelly’s “own safety”. They reversed themselves on Tuesday and said prison officials had removed him from the suicide watch based on a subsequent “clinical assessment”.
The Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songwriter was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking last year. He has denied wrongdoing and plans to appeal his conviction.
